Should I use Vellux for my hedgehogs bedding?
I have seen a lot of discussions on bulletin boards and email lists on
the topic of Vellux as cage liners. Below you will find many of the
commonly given reasons why many prefer Vellux blankets over wood shavings.
- Wood chips have been known to harbor mites.
- Wood chips and splinters can get stuck in sensitive areas, including
eyes and mouths.
- Some wood chips can be dusty and cause respritory problems.
- Unlike towels, Vellux does not have loose threads and will not
unravel.
- Vellux is wash-able and reusable. It stands up incredibly well to
being washed often and even stands up well to hedgehogs scratching at it.
- Vellux allows for faster detection of health issues. It is easier to
detect problems on Vellux as they tend t get lost in shavings (bloody pee,
liquid poo, etc)
- No wood shavings on the floor.
Note: Even though Vellux comes in a variety of colors, I highly recommend
using the light colors. The lighter colors will allow for detection
of possible health issues faster than if they were to get masked by the
darker color blankets.
